Our Library

Students in the Library.

At the heart of the school, the Virginia Beach Friends School Library serves a community of students from preschool age to high school seniors, parents, and teachers. The library collection currently contains over 25,000 books. Subscriptions to over 30 periodicals and professional journals, and materials such as videotapes, pamphlets, posters, and teaching materials support the school's educational program. In addition to the print material available, the library has five computers (three for student use) that can be used to run the electronic card catalog system (Athena), Internet research, and word processing.

The Librarians.

Community resources include the Virginia Beach Media Center (weekly borrowing privileges for classroom use of videos), the Virginia Beach Public Library Internet Search, and the Chesapeake Public Library Internet Search.

The library programs promote the love of books, reading and learning. Instructional techniques include: reading new books out loud or revisiting old favorites; guiding book searches for students; and guiding Internet searches for older students, teachers, staff members, parents. Students often come to the library on their own time and are given individualized attention by the staff

In addition to the daily operation of the library, the staff has three community oriented programs along with special events used to generate funds to build the library collection while continuously promoting the enjoyment of reading and the benefits of book ownership. These programs are:

  • Christmas Book and Gift Fair (runs the Wednesday through Saturday after Thanksgiving), the major fundraiser for the library and an event which draws many people from the wider community of Hampton Roads;
  • Spring Book Fair (runs the week after Mother's Day), the kick-off for summer reading initiatives which also raises money for collection development; and,
  • Used Book Sale (runs the last two days of the school year), where items that have been weeded from the library collection are adopted into new homes, while raising funds for the development of the collection. Donations accepted.
